How to mozzie proof you home

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

Mosquitoes are an unfortunate part of summer of Australia, and not only do they leave behind an itchy bump when they bite you, but in some parts of Australia they are also carriers of various illnesses.

Here are five easy and effective ways you can mozzie-proof your home and reduce the risk of you and your family being bitten during the sunny season.

1. Invest in screens

Installing flyscreens and other mesh covers for windows, door, vents and chimneys is one of the best ways to stop mosquitoes getting into your home.

Screens are your home's first line of defence against mosquitoes. "The latest screens allow for a streamlined and minimal look while inhibiting mosquitoes and flies better than ever," says Ainslie Dunn, director of Eurobodalla Home Improvements.

Look for mesh with a 1.7x1.3mm aperture. Though, if you live in an area prone to sandflies or midges, a finer mesh with an aperture of about 1.2x1.3mm is required.

Rainwater tanks, septic tanks, and vent pipes all need to be screened as well with mosquito proof covers. Be sure to seal all gaps around the lid, and ensure leach drains are completely covered too.

2. Use repellent on both you and your home

If you’re hanging around outside it’ always good to give yourself a quick spray with bug repellent, however it’s a great idea to spray you home too. Use an insect-repelling aerosol to spray in the dark nooks and crevices of your home such as under the furniture, in the cupboards, behind curtains and other hiding areas.

3. Remove Potential Mosquito Havens

Mosquitoes can breed in even the smallest amount of water so it’s important that you remove all stagnant water from sitting in your garden or around your property. It’s also a good idea to clean up around your property and pack away or remove any items, such as trailers, wheelbarrows, toys, pools, boats, etc, where water can pool after rainfall. Keep lawns and gardens trimmed and maintained.

4. Flush Regularly

Gutters, bird baths, drain sumps and outdoor pet watering bowls should all be cleaned regularly to help keep bloodsucking bugs at bay. Swimming pools need to be kept well chlorinated, filtered and free of dead leaves otherwise even these can become breeding grounds.

5. Go au natural

Use plants to naturally repel mosquitoes and flies from your home. Citronella geranium, Rosemary, Basil, Lavender and Marigolds all repel flies and mosquitoes.
